RECONCILIATION – THE SACRAMENT OF PENANCE

This sacrament is know as Reconciliation, Penance or Confession. They are different names for the same thing.

What is Penance?

‘The Sacrament of Penance is one of two sacraments of healing (the other being the Anointing of the Sick). Penance is a sacrament of forgiveness and celebrates God’s love and mercy towards us. It is about acknowledging and naming those times when we know we have done wrong, and then making peace and restoring the relationships with those who have been affected by our poor choices.

The Sacrament of Penance is celebrated through the Rites of Reconciliation.’ Flame of Faith website

The Sacrament of Penance is celebrated through the Rites of Reconciliation. All Saints provides preparation for the two most common rites.

FIRST RITE OF RECONCILIATION

In year 5, the young people of our parish (who have been confirmed, and received First Communion the previous year) are offered preparation for the First Rite of Reconciliation. In this rite, the young people celebrate the sacrament individually with the priest. There is no gathering as a group, and they are responsible for their own examination of conscience. At All Saints we see this as a rite of passage for our young people who are then welcome to join our Friday night youth group.
